Oct. 7 2020 Agriculture By Nicole Burke

With the variety of tillage tools available from Deere, we thought we would take a look at two of the newest Deere tillage tools to help you better understand their differences and which one may be the right fit for your operation. Today, we will be comparing the 2660VT Variable-Intensity Tillage Tool and the 2680H High-Performance Disk, first both available from Deere for Model Year 2019.

Let’s take a look at a summary of the tools, the key differences to help you identify which one is right for you, along with two videos from our local John Deere Tillage Specialist.

2660VT Variable-Intensity Tillage Tool

The 2660VT has an adjustable gang angle making it a true multi-season (spring or fall) machine that features an all-new frame and the right amount of weight per blade to handle a wide range of soil, crop residue, and field conditions, all while operating at speeds up to 10 miles per hour. The 0- to 12-degree adjustable gang angle lets you size and pin residue, while leaving a consistent field finish. Operators can quickly and easily adjust gang angle with a manual slider or utilize TruSet™ Tillage Technology to make adjustments from the cab and create customized prescriptions. The tool also features the exclusive Commander™ Blade with a double finish to more easily penetrate hard soils and size and mix residue and the ProFinish™ leveling system with dual hydraulic rolling baskets to more effectively reduce clods and pin residue based on soil and residue conditions.

Specifications:

- There are 6 models available ranging in working widths from 20 to 50 feet in three- or five-section configurations. All models have compact transport dimensions to help operators get between fields with ease. The three-section models are under 14 feet high and the five-section models fold to less than 15 ½ feet wide.

- 10-15 horsepower per foot

2680H High-Performance Disk

The 2680H is another true spring or fall tillage tool that combines speed and tillage performance in one machine. The High-Performance Disk is capable of field speeds from 10 mph up to 14 mph. These disks can effectively till more than twice as many acres per day compared to traditional disks of similar sizes. Another unique feature of this disk is the individually mounted smooth or notched disk blades with a suspension system that allows the blades to follow ground contours, ride over obstructions and spring back into position for a consistent field finish. Customers can choose between the smooth or notched disk blades in a variety of combinations. The disk comes with a wide range of rear finishing options to meet your specific preferences. There is also a unique way of operating this particular tillage tool, the operator leaves the disk in the ground while turning to optimize time and performance. This tool is meant for high speeds.

Specifications:

- Available in working widths ranging from 8 to 45 feet

- 15+ horsepower per foot

Key Differences

2660VT - Ideal for customer looking to:

2680H - Ideal for customer looking to:

  • Size/anchor residue without deep soil disturbance at up to 10 mph
  • Mix and bury residue up to 6 in. deep
  • Mitigate top layer compaction (up to 3 in.)
  • Remove weeds and/or terminate cover crops
  • Achieve low to mid intensity vertical tillage
  • Easily operate with less skilled labor
  • Customize the field finish in varying conditions and agronomic goals
  • Level ruts and warm soil before planting
  • Utilize TruSet™ and/or Rx-based tillage
  • Cover a large number of acres quickly with working speeds 10 mph to 14 mph

In summary, the 2660VT gives operators the ability to adjust multiple functions on the machine on-the-go in order to achieve their desired tillage output, spring or fall. The tool provides a more level seedbed with less compaction leaving more residue in the field. The 2680H covers more acres per hour while creating a more ridged seedbed and eliminating more weeds. The 2680H creates just slightly more compaction than the 2660VT and turns over more soil.
