Know the Difference: Rotary Cutter vs. Grooming Mower
If you have land, likelihood is, you’re planning on buying some form of a mower or cutter to maintain it. The catch is, there are lots of different tractor implements that are casually referred to as mowers. With so many options, how do you know which type is best for you? Two of the most common types for property maintenance are grooming mowers and rotary cutters. One gives more of a manicured cut while the other is better for clearing brush.
Rotary Cutter
If you’re looking for an implement to cut through thick grass and rough brush, rotary cutters are likely your best choice. These cutters are designed to clear overgrowth and maintain pastures. Depending on the model, these cutters can make quick work of cutting through heavy brush such as tree saplings and thick vines. You can adjust the cutting height from 1 ½ inches to 9 inches off the ground. Rotary cutters leave the grass with a rough cut. These cutters come in a variety of sizes. Frontier and John Deere make rotary cutters that are compatible with compact and utility tractors. When you are shopping for the best size cutter, take into consideration the PTO power and width of your tractor. Buying too large of a cutter could overload the tractor. Ideally you should get a cutter that is at least as wide as the working width of your tractor.
Grooming Mower
If you’re looking for a mower that will give your yard a manicured finish, grooming mowers are likely the implement for you. As opposed to rotary cutters, these mowers are intended to be used on tender turf grass. These mowers are perfect for yards, golf courses, and ball fields. You can adjust the cutting height and pitch of the mower. John Deere and Frontier make grooming mowers compatible with compact and utility tractors. If you have a compact tractor, our Frontier branded grooming mowers will be the ones designed for your tractor. If you have a full-sized utility tractor, our John Deere branded grooming mowers will be the mowers you’ll want to look at.
