Swinging for the Future: The Farmer's Open Unites Illinois Ag Community for Diesel Tech Students
Little did they know, that a casual conversation over lunch four years ago at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Lacon, Illinois, would spark the creation of the annual Farmer’s Open golf outing for diesel tech students. During the discussion, the idea of hosting a golf outing was brought up. Pete Merna, a large ag salesman for Prairie State Tractor, was present and was asked if he had ever hosted a golf outing before. When someone asked if he'd ever hosted one, Merna, like many others, said no. But local farmer Dave Streitmatter wasn't deterred. With a determined spirit, Streitmatter declared, "Well, we are going to have one, and you're helping host it, right here at Timber Ridge!"

The lunchtime chat turned into something much bigger. The group recognized the opportunity to raise funds for something they were passionate about — farming and their central Illinois community. They knew they wanted to support student diesel technicians and their local John Deere dealer Prairie State Tractor. Thus, the idea for The Farmer’s Open was born, with a mission to raise money to assist student diesel technicians through their schooling. With remarkable support and a dedicated committee comprising individuals like Merna, Streitmatter, LeRoy and Laura Poignant, and Mark Sullivan, the Farmer’s Open was created. Their passion and commitment were instrumental in making the golf outing a reality, and without their efforts, it would not be possible.
In its first year in 2021, the Farmer’s Open came to life becoming something more than imaginable, raising thousands of dollars for future ag mechanics. With each passing year, more people joined in on the fun, and sponsors eagerly signed on to support the cause. Attendees ranged from farmers to local business sponsors and Prairie State Tractor employees, demonstrating widespread industry backing.

The fun doesn't stop at swinging clubs! Food and drinks are generously donated, fueling a day of camaraderie for a great cause. Illinois Central College DPET (Diesel Powered Equipment Technology) students from nearby East Peoria get involved too, lending a valuable helping hand. This not only gives them real-world experience but also fosters connections with the agricultural community beyond the classroom. It's a win-win, with the students gaining practical skills while farmers get to interact with the next generation entering the field. This exchange creates a valuable feedback loop between students, instructors, and farmers, ensuring future success for everyone involved.

The event isn't just about golf; it's a celebration that brings together customers, farmers, students, and sponsors alike. Sponsors such as seed dealers, community banks, grain elevators, and other local companies rally behind the cause, recognizing the importance of investing in future talent for the agricultural community. But The Farmer’s Open isn't just about fundraising; it's about creating a vibrant, inclusive environment where the agriculture community can come together. It's a testament to the support from customers, companies, and the broader community. Not only has this brought forth community involvement within the area it has brought surrounding area farmers to join as well.

The Farmer's Open is more than a golf outing; it's a chance to invest in the future of agriculture. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses of all sizes who want to show their support for the next generation of agricultural technicians. This event fosters unity within the community, ensuring a bright future for the industry.
