Grass Mulching: Everything you need to know to get started this spring
At last we are headed for warmer times. After a long winter that seems to have been generous, it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy some sunshine.

Did you know that mulching your grass clippings and returning them to the lawn naturally is very beneficial? It will help make your lawn thicker, greener and much healthier during the hot summer months ahead. Here are a few tips to consider.
Tips and Tricks
Homeowners have multiple options when cutting their grass. Holland and Sons has many different machines and models – from Honda walk-behind mowers to large John Deere garden tractors as well as many zero-turn models. They all can be set up to mulch grass clippings. When mowing grass and using a mulching system, you must live by the 1/3 rule. This means when you cut the grass, you only want to remove 1/3 of the height at a time. If your mower deck is set at 3 inches, you will want to cut the lawn when it has grown to 4-4 ½ inches tall. The best results for mulching occur when smaller amounts of grass are being released back into the lawn.
Mulching decks are not designed to be used once a week during peak mowing times. Cutting less often creates too much material, and the mulching system won’t perform as designed. This will leave chunks and larger clippings that will take more time to break down into natural nutrients. Plus, you won’t be very happy with the appearance.
Side discharging grass clipping leaves larger pieces of grass, which will take much longer to break down and turn into natural fertilizer. Bagging the lawn, though sometimes necessary depending on time of year, takes a significant amount of natural fertilizer away from your lawn, and creates a waste issue as well.
