Quick Take: New John Deere 5R and 6M Tractor Enhancements
Largely overshadowed by the new John Deere X9 Combines, this June, Deere also released enhancements to their 5R and 6M Series Utility Tractors. These mid-sized tractors are often the first choice for many farm and livestock operators as well as those working in industrial and commercial operations. The major updates include newly integrated AutoTrac™ guidance and more transmission options to offer customers more value and cost-effective possibilities. These updates will provide customers with increased capability and customization specific to their operation on 5R and 6M Tractors.
Integrated AutoTrac Guidance
Deere wants all customers to have the opportunity to experience the advancements and benefits of technologies like AutoTrac in an easy and affordable way. The 5R and 6M Tractors now have an easy, cost-effective way for customers to view AutoTrac Automated Guidance System information without having to purchase a separate display. If you’re not familiar with AutoTrac, it simply enables hands-free steering for the tractor using GPS coordinates to control the tractor. Whether it’s used for mowing, spraying or other field work, AutoTrac will allow operators to feel more confident in every pass by reducing implement overlap, finishing more acres in less time and helping to reduce operator fatigue. Plus, you don’t have to worry about complex setup and expensive updates. This is AutoTrac simplified.
Now, John Deere 5R and 6M Tractors can be ordered with AutoTrac Guidance built into the tractor’s corner-post display. Using the corner-post display for automated steering simplifies the process for operators of all experience levels, who may have no previous experience with AutoTrac. In addition to the tractor being built AutoTrac ready, customers will need a John Deere StarFire™ Receiver on their tractor before they can get started. This option will allow customers to experience the basics of AutoTrac and utilize straight-line guidance without purchasing a separate display. However, for more advanced AutoTrac functions and if you want to add precision ag solutions like Section Control and on-screen mapping, other John Deere displays and activations will need to be purchased.
5R Specific Updates
In addition to the new AutoTrac integration, Deere is offering more transmission choices on the 5R lineup. Customers now have the option of a 16/16 CommandQuad™ Automatic Transmission that automatically selects the ideal gear and engine speed for optimal fuel efficiency. To provide convenient implement hookup without the need for a quick hitch, Deere added the option of Category II hook-style draft links and center link. Customers can also pick from new tire options with the addition of large 540/65R38 or 600/65R34 sizes. These bigger tires improve load-carrying capacity at the same tire pressure as smaller tires while their larger footprint can reduce soil compaction. The tires also are made with low-angle lugs at the shoulder area to improve traction and higher angles around the center line to improve ride comfort.
6M Specific Updates
Select 6M Tractors (6110M-6140M Cab Models ONLY) now have the option of a new premium Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT™), perfect for customers looking for more precise speed control or who prefer an automatic transmission. You can match your speed precisely to your job—perfect for front-loader applications, and you can run as slow as 0.03 mph up to 25 mph—ideal for material transport. AutoClutch is a feature of IVT that allows operators to quickly brake and stop the tractor without using the clutch. Customers also can now choose a hydraulic pump that is larger than the standard pump on select 6M Tractors to quickly raise and lower or power large implements and attachments.
