Tell Grass Clippings Where To Go With John Deere MulchControl
Grass mulch can help keep your lawn healthy and looking its best, and John Deere has the tools you need to take advantage of these benefits for your lawn.
What is mulching and why you should consider it?
Grass mulch is the easy and natural way to feed your lawn the essential nutrients it needs to grow. Mulching is beneficial because it returns grass clippings to the ground as fertilizer, which promotes lawn growth. The grass clippings are full of nitrogen-rich nutrients that feed your lawn and reduce the amount of fertilizer you need. It also creates a beautiful looking lawn. Mulch mowing allows clippings to be cut finely enough, so that they can’t be seen when redistributed into the lawn. It also controls clippings dispersion into unwanted areas such as driveways, landscape beds, near building or even onto the operator. As a result, mulching makes you more productive by reducing the cleanup time to dispose of clippings or leaves during the fall. Plus, mulching is easy to do thanks to John Deere’s MulchControl options for your mower deck.
What is MulchControl?
John Deere’s exclusive MulchControl System is the easy way to mulch while you mow. A mower deck equipped with MulchControl not only does a great job of mowing, but also mulching your lawn. A heavy-duty baffle opens and closes to convert the mower from side discharge mode to mulch mode or vice versa. When the MulchControl baffle is open (side discharge mode), most of the material follows freely out the side discharge or into a material collection system. But MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited back in your lawn.
How to use it?
Switching between mulching and side discharging is quick and easy. Operators can convert between modes, making it simple to change between modes as conditions require. There are two different kinds of MulchControl Kits available. Operators can switch between mulching and side discharging with the pull of a lever on the mower deck or even the push of a button from the tractor seat with new Electric One-Touch Technology (a John Deere Exclusive).
Helpful Tips
Some tips for effectively using your mower equipped with MulchControl:
- Follow the “one-third” rule when mulch mowing, taking no more off than the top third of the grass blade. While lawns benefit from clippings, they don’t want to be smothered by them. Using best mowing practices can leave grass room to breathe and looking as clean as it would with bagging.
- Fast-growing conditions will warrant more frequent mowing.
- Mulching works better when the grass is dry.
- Use the side discharge mode when cutting wet, tall or thick grass, mulching with not work effectively and may result in unsightly clumps.
- Make sure your blades are sharp. Sharp blades help ensure a precise, quality cut.
